Issue : 2
Team : T.Shrinivasan ( tshrinivasan@gmail.com )
K.Balavignesh ( kbalavignesh@gmail.com )
Date : 03-05-2008

1. Nokia Internet Tablets get Ubuntu and Qt

Nokia, the major mobile phone manufacturor is concentrating on using Linux
in their new Internet tablets. Ubuntu is going to be the Operating System inside
the tablet and the GTK and QT are the Graphical User Interface Libraries.

So open source develpers can develop their own applications easily
using the new Nokia Internet Tablets.

http://arstechnica.com/journals/linux.ars/2008/04/23/nokia-internet-tablets-get-ubuntu-and-qt

2. Sun to Fully Open Source Java

Sun Microsystems will be removing the last restrictions on Java to make it
completely open source. Sun wants Java to be easily available for use in Linux distributions.

Sun has already released some parts of Java as Open Source, but not fully.
Now it decided to open it fully by the end of this year.

http://www.tectonic.co.za/?p=2369

3. The Top 75 Open Source Security Apps

The open source security area is growing rapidly. Here are top contenders from
anti-virus, firewalls, forensics, intrusion detection, and more.

4. Girls Love Linux

If you think that Linux is only “for the boys”, then think again. Did you know that
there are women-oriented Linux communities that are created to provide both
technical and social support for women Linux users? The most well known among
them is called “LinuxChix“, and I’m not kidding. To know more about LinuxChix,
I have collected some interesting facts about them so read on.

http://www.junauza.com/2008/04/girls-love-linux.html
http://www.linuxchix.org/

5. Kerala Blazing the Trail for Free Software in Schools

Kerala is all set to become the first state in the country to completely banish
Microsoft and allow only GNU/Linux free software to be used in the mandatory IT tests
at the state SSLC examinations that half a million students took in March. Till last year,
they could take the exam using either free software or the Microsoft platform.
But, this year they completely moved to Free Software.

6. OpenOffice.org and ODF adoption in Malaysia

MAMPU, the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit,
decided that they were going to go OpenOffice.org and go ODF, and dump
Microsoft Office by year-end 2008.

http://knowledge.oscc.org.my/solution-areas/desktop/OpenOffice.org/openoffice-adoption
